Chapter 32

Sam’s voice was reverberating in her head. It had been for days. Come on, Rachel, I want to make love to you. She shuddered a little, unable to stop the tingle that scaled her spine and rested inside her. Taking the left hand turn at the light, she steered herself and Sheree toward Sam’s for Tuesday night. Somehow, he’d been left holding the basket again.

“Cold?” her roommate’s voice cut into her thoughts, dashing them to pieces around her.

Rae answered “yes,” as it was far easier than the truth. The truth was long and fragile. Friday had given her the opportunity she had wanted, then stolen it right back. She hadn’t ever gotten the chance to finish her conversation with Sam. She’d managed to lay only the first part of the path before she heard noises beyond the swinging door. It was difficult enough for her to have the conversation without an audience. Looking back, she had turned to humor out of fear. It would be hard enough to place it at Sam’s feet in private. It would be way too much to lay her heart on the line with everyone looking on.

From the corner of her eye, she saw Sheree looking her up and down. But she found any grace for a witty comment gone. So she said nothing, and was thankful when her roommate kept the silence.

In the kitchen last week, when she’d started her opening gambit, Rae had only wanted to see where the path would lead. She would follow if she wanted. Instead she found herself staring into molten blue eyes, while the perfect mouth told her he wanted to make love to her. She could still hear the sounds, the lilt of it, the undercurrent. Just the memory of it turned her to jelly. But what she heard in her head was merely what she had heard that night. The way she had heard it, and she knew that wasn’t necessarily the way it had been spoken.

She had turned to open the kitchen door, her breathing all but stopped, and her ability to continue as though it were a joke completely gone. It had taken every effort to laugh and be outraged at her friends, and not betray the way the core of her had fallen, elevator crazy, straight through her.

Rae watched as her hands rotated the steering wheel in front of her. They knew the way. Sam’s again. She had driven by twice in the few days between. Wracked her brain for a good excuse to drop in unannounced, to call to need his help. But nothing even semi-legitimate had come to her. So she’d waited. Had done a short, two-day surveillance for Lincoln. Printed photos for the show. Gone to the gallery and agonized over which frames to have them put on which pieces. Gone to her witchcraft class with Sloan and not heard anything from Yasmin or Luke. And she’d stared, lost, at the print of Sam standing by his car.

Still, she didn’t know what she wanted from him.
